Our PhD in Psychology gives graduates the opportunity to benefit from a vibrant and supportive research environment with internationally recognised researchers. Our labs are well-equipped with state-of-the-art equipment to help develop your research, including EEG and related physiological equipment, eye-trackers, observation suites and PC-based testing cubicles.

We would be willing to consider research proposals in a variety of psychology disciplines, but we particularly welcome enquiries from those interested in projects in the following areas:

  • Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Cultural aspects of Psychology, especially:
    • Social psychology of communication and/or culture
    • Critical social psychology
  • Developmental Psychology, especially:
    • Reading in adults and children, including effects of multilingualism
    • Social development using comparative methodologies
    • Autism Spectrum Conditions
  • Perceptual and Cognition, especially:
    • Body (mis)representations
    • Face perception, including health-related judgements
    • Motor control, kinesthesia, and agency
    • Action monitoring and error detection
    • Executive function
  • Clinical neuropsychology, especially:
    • Neuroimaging and neurogenetics, in typical and atypical brains
    • Neurocognitive rehabilitation
  • Forensic Psychology, especially:
    • Aversive personalities and offending
    • Forensic interviewing

What to do next?

You must express your interest in studying for a PhD with us by sending your CV and an initial research proposal (about 500 words) on the topic that you are thinking of exploring in your PhD to This email address is being protected from spambots.   1. What are you going to research: The main research question.
  2. Why you think that an answer to this question is important: The relevance of the topic from an academic viewpoint.
  3. How you will answer the question: The main methodology applied.

Meaningful answers to these questions will enable us to put you in touch with any academic staff with interests and expertise in your subject area, and for you to work with them to develop your proposal into an original research project that will move your field forwards. Once a supervisor and suitable research topic have been identified, we will encourage you to submit an application for admission to the PhD programme.

Minimum upper second-class (2:1) Bachelor’s degree (honours) and Master’s degree (relevant to the discipline) or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Malaysian Government, acceptable to the University

IELTS: 7.0 overall, with no element below 6.0

The PhD is a three to four-year full-time programme, but it can also be completed part-time over five to six years.

Students can begin their PhD at any time of the year. It is most common to commence studies at the start of the normal academic year in late September.

There are no application deadlines. However, to allow time for us to process your application and ensure you have time to source funding (if required), we recommend that you apply by the following dates:

  • Malaysian applicants: No later than two months before you wish to start the programme.
  • International applicants: No later than four months before you wish to start the programme.

Malaysians: RM 27,000 per annum
International Students: RM 33,000 per annum

Malaysians: 45% discount on full-time fee
International Students: 45% discount on full-time fee
