National Higher Education Fund: Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional (PTPTN)
The University of Reading Malaysia is listed as one of the approved institutions for the PTPTN Education Financing Scheme. Individuals pursuing studies at the University of Reading Malaysia are eligible to apply to the National Higher Education Fund: Perbadanan Tabung Pendidikan Tinggi Nasional (PTPTN) for partial funding towards their course fees and living costs.
Loan eligibility
To be eligible to receive the PTPTN loan, applicants must:
- Be a Malaysian citizen aged not more than 45 years old on the date of application, pursuing a full-time first Degree, Master or PHD programme at the University of Reading Malaysia.
- Have received an offer for admission to the University of Reading Malaysia (UoRM) and be enrolled as an active/current student.
- The programme applied must have the approval of the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) and is registered with the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA) and PTPTN.
- Not receive any financial assistance from other funds/bodies (e.g. JPA or MARA).
- Must have a Skim Simpanan Pendidikan Nasional (SSPN) account with a minimum deposit of RM20 at any PTPTN branch/counter or at Maybank (merged with personal account).
- Must complete the study in Malaysia.
Loan disbursement
- The loan will be credited directly to the student’s Maybank account.
- First payment will be made within 30–60 days after successful submission of the agreement.
- Subsequent payments will be made once per academic year, subject to the student obtaining a minimum GPA of 2.00 or a PASS in the previous semester.
- Disbursement may be suspended due to poor academic performance (GPA below 2.0), deferment of studies, or withdrawal from study.
Loan repayments
- Repayments will commence 12 months after completion of studies.
- There is a flat interest rate of 1%. Students who settle their loans within 12 months of completing their studies will not incur the 1% interest.
- The repayment period depends on the total loan amount:
- Less than RM10,000 – within 5 years
- RM10,000 to RM22,000 – within 10 years
- RM22,000 to RM50,000 – within 15 years
- More than RM50,000 – within 20 years
- Students struggling with repayments can visit a PTPTN branch to negotiate a loan restructure.
- Loan defaulters may be blacklisted.
- PTPTN loan can be converted to a scholarship. Students who receive First Class Honours for their degrees can convert their PTPTN loan into a scholarship, with no need to repay the loan.
How to apply: online application
- Download and register on the myPTPTN app, and complete eKYC verification.
- Open a personal Maybank account and a Skim Simpanan Pendidikan Nasional (SSPN-i Prime) account with a minimum deposit of RM20 at any PTPTN branch/counter or at Maybank (merged with personal account).
- Purchase a PTPTN Pin Number (6 digits) at any BSN counter or through BSN online. The PTPTN Pin Number is only valid for 6 months from the date of purchase.
- Complete all information in the myPTPTN app, upload the offer letter, and submit the application before the closing date.
- PTPTN will notify you via email of the outcome. You may also log on to http://www.ptptn.gov.my/gateway/ to check your application status (7–10 working days after the closing date).
- Upon approval, download the agreement from the PTPTN website and complete the agreement steps within 14 days of receiving the email. Submit 2 sets of the printed agreement to the University PIC, or choose ‘Digital Signed’ and pay RM25 through online banking.

Other things to know about PTPTN
- Check application status: The status can be checked on the PTPTN website 14 working days after the closing date of the online application.
- Cancel an application: Download the ‘Borang Pembatalan dan Penolakan Tawaran Pinjaman Pendidikan PTPTN’ from the PTPTN website, fill it up and submit to any PTPTN office.
- Overseas study: PTPTN loans do not cover or fund overseas programmes. Upon transfer to a university overseas, a student would need to find a different source of funding.
