General Studies/ Mata Pelajaran Umum (MPU)

 

 

The General Studies/Mata Pelajaran Umum (MPU) is a qualification that all Malaysian and international undergraduate students of private education institutions in Malaysia, including the University of Reading Malaysia, must complete before being awarded an undergraduate or honours degree..

The Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia announced the ruling on Section 41(5) of the Private Higher Education Act 1996 on 1st September 2013.

The main objective of MPU, is to enhance the knowledge and soft skills of each student, including philosophy, history, teamwork and communication, to ensure that all undergraduate students are knowledgeable, balanced, skillful, and have a strong leadership abilities.

The MPU qualification does not apply to students at Foundation, Masters or Doctoral levels.

We are pleased to announce that students applying to study an undergraduate degree at UoRM now have the opportunity to complete up to four of the required MPU modules at UoRM via undergraduate April and July intake. Students can apply to join our April and July 2024 intake here.

Current UoRM undergraduate students also have the opportunity to complete their MPU modules in July- September during the Summer Break

 

MPU Term Dates

Sessions 2023/2024 (July Intake)

The July term below is optional for the new and current Malaysian students.

End of MPU Term 20th September 2024

*Any remaining MPU modules need to be completed during Term 1 September or Term 2

MPU modules are also delivered during the undergraduate Term 1 and 2 each year.

Undergraduate degree students are required to achieve 10 – 14 credits in order to graduate with the General Studies/MPU qualification.

These modules can be undertaken at any time, in any sequence throughout the duration of an undergraduate degree, as long as students enrol in, undertake, complete and pass the required modules before the end of their undergraduate degree.

An exemption for the National Language A module will be granted to students who have scored credit and above in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).
