Secretary General of Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water, speaks at University of Reading Malaysia’s inaugural Distinguished Lecture Series

The Secretary General of Malaysia’s Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water, Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Zaini Ujang, delivered a presentation on Sustainable Development Goals, to participants of the University of Reading Malaysia’s inaugural Distinguished Lecture Series.

The brand new Lecture Series was launched today at the University of Reading Malaysia (UoRM) in EduCity, Iskandar Puteri, Johor. It is an initiative being delivered by the university’s Research Committee, with the aim of further enhancing the quality and reputation of its research. The University of Reading is renowned for the quality of its research, of which 98 percent is deemed to be of international standard and 78% is classed as internationally excellent, according to the latest Research Excellence Framework. The Lecture Series is also part of the University’s commitment to reaching out to the community in which it is situated and contributing to public discourse.

Since 2015, the University of Reading Malaysia (UoRM) has been hosting regular research seminars for staff, students and the public and for the first time, it is running a series of public lectures comprising high-profile guest speakers.

Dato’ Seri Zaini was formerly the Vice Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), in which he was later appointed as Director General of Higher Education at the Ministry of Higher Education. His academic contributions have been in the field of environmental management and technology, particularly water and wastewater treatment, sustainable resource strategies and industrial ecology. He has served in various positions for public agencies, including Chairman of Environmental Quality Council, Malaysia and member of the National Water Services Commission.

His presentation centred on the country’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including an overview of the Green Technology Master Plan 2017-2030, the vision to reduce greenhouse gases by 45% within this time frame, and the need to address the financial and environmental sustainability of the country’s water/sewerage sector.

The University of Reading Malaysia’s Associate Professor in Finance, Dr Mohd Pisal Zainal said, “It has been an absolute privilege hearing from Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Zaini Ujang.
