University of Reading Malaysia Celebrates Outstanding International Student Achievement

The University of Reading Malaysia (UoRM) today celebrated the outstanding academic success of Lawrence Koh Ben You, who has received two internationally recognised awards.

Lawrence, a second year BSc Quantity Surveying student at UoRM, has beaten hundreds of entries from across the globe, to win the Bentley Systems’ 2016 Bentley Institute Student Design Competition in the 'Innovation in Visualisation' General Category. The competition acknowledges innovative and technically advanced projects created by university and technical college students from around the globe. The achievement comes with a USD1000 scholarship.

Lawrence has also received the University of Reading Chancellor’s Award, the university’s most prestigious student award scheme, which recognises the achievements of its top achieving 1% of students at both its UK and Malaysia campus.

A prize-giving ceremony was held today at the UoRM campus at Educity@Iskandar.

The 2016 Bentley Institute Student Design award for ‘Innovation in Visualisation’ was presented by Mohit Bradoo, Bentley Systems Academic Programme Director for APAC. The Chancellor’s Award was presented by Professor Tony Downes, Provost of the University of Reading Malaysia. The ceremony was witnessed by representatives of Bentley Systems, academics from the UoRM School of the Built Environment and its Quantity Surveying students.

Professor Tony Downes said:

“The University of Reading Malaysia is immensely proud to have one of our own awarded with the esteemed Chancellor’s Award. Congratulations to Lawrence for this exceptional achievement.

“As a university in the top 1% in the world, we pride ourselves on giving our students a world-class education and shaping them into highly-skilled and accomplished graduates, ready to excel on the global careers market. We believe Lawrence has a bright future ahead of him and we wish him all the very best for the completion of his studies at UoRM. We believe he has what it takes to excel in his chosen vocation.”

Dr Mohd Faris Khamidi, Associate Professor and Head of Built Environment at the University of Reading Malaysia said:

“Congratulations to Lawrence for being awarded the 2016 Bentley Institute Student Design award for ‘Innovation in Visualisation’. To win an award at an international scale is no small feat and it makes the team from the UoRM School of the Built Environment extremely proud.

“It is extraordinary that a quantity surveying student has won a competition in a skill that architecture and interior design students traditionally excel in. This proves Lawrence’s versatility and ability to understand and deliver on a client’s requests.

“We believe Lawrence is setting a benchmark for his peers locally and internationally and we are committed to supporting him as he continues to succeed in his studies.”

Mohit Bradoo, Bentley Systems Academic Programme Director for APAC said:

“The 2016 Bentley Institute Student Design Competition encourages exploration of software as part of student learning, supporting development of the skills needed for their future careers.

“Among hundreds of submissions, jurors selected the best in each category. Lawrence Koh Ben You’s project won the Visualization category, with its excellent use of Bentley LumenRT to enliven a building model. He best leveraged the software to add a compelling environmental context, transforming it into a detailed and lively community centre."

The 2016 Bentley Institute Student Design Competition required tertiary students to put their design skills to the test by designing and submitting an innovative project using software by Bentley.

To win in the ‘Innovation in Visualisation’ category, Lawrence designed a visually appealing new community centre building using Bentley’s software programme called MicroStation CONNECT Edition. He completed the design with Bentley’s LumenRT, which enables users to create a convincing computer animation by adding moving objects and surroundings to the building.
