Student-led Buka Puasa Event at University of Reading Malaysia Raises Funds for Local Nursing Home

University of Reading Malaysia (UoRM) students have raised RM3,000 for a local nursing home during a Buka Puasa event at the University’s campus in EduCity in Iskandar Malaysia, Johor.

The event, the first student-led Buka Puasa celebration at the University, was held on the evening of Wednesday 14th June and drew around 250 guests from across Johor Bahru, including Datuk Ismail bin Ibrahim, Chief Executive of Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA). The event was also attended by staff and students from other EduCity institutions including MDIS, Raffles University and Netherlands Maritime Institute of Technology (NMIT).

On the occasion, the students gifted 100% of the proceeds of the event to representatives of Pusat Jagaan Impian Syimah (PJIS), along with donations including toiletries and foodstuffs like rice, oil, canned and packaged foods.

Tony Downes, Provost, University of Reading Malaysia said:
“This event has been significant for several reasons; not only is it the first time the students have organised a Buka Puasa event but it has been the biggest charity drive run by our students, and it has been in keeping with the spirit of Ramadan – sharing and giving to the underprivileged. We are proud of what our students have achieved.

“We are also pleased to have welcomed guests from other universities in EduCity. It is encouraging to note that this has been one of a growing number of intervarsity events in EduCity and we look forward to more.”

Ahmad Luqman Mohammad Nizam, Event Head, University of Reading Malaysia said:
“We chose to run a charity drive for PJIS because we wanted to support an organisation which is not already receiving funding from large companies and has not had the attention it deserves.

“We hope this event will help to raise awareness of PJIS and their plight; we also hope the event will create greater rapport between students at UoRM and our guests.

UoRM students are now planning a post-event activity whereby they will visit the residents of the PJIS nursing home.
