Launch of Law degree at University of Reading Malaysia campus

The University of Reading Malaysia has now opened applications for the inaugural intake of the newly-launched Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme due to start in September 2019.  It is the first and only foreign international branch campus in Malaysia to offer a law degree.

The programme allows students to study the University of Reading LLB Law degree, which is the exactly the same degree as awarded on the UK campus, in Malaysia for the entire 3 years duration of the programme.

In addition, by studying at the University of Reading Malaysia, students benefit from the enhanced learning experience that is a hallmark of the University of Reading, and which provides the perfect balance of academic learning and practical experience.

Professor James Devenney, Head of the Reading Law School and Professor of Transnational Commercial Law, said “the University of Reading is known for producing law graduates who are well-rounded and highly-adaptable, and therefore able to rise quickly in their chosen legal or business career”.

One key aspect of the learning experience is the applied, problem-solving approach to learning in which students are presented with authentic cases to examine and discuss.  Students also have the opportunity to take part in client interviewing, negotiation and mooting competitions.

Associate Professor Anne Chrishanthani Vergis, Head at the School of Law, University Reading Malaysia emphasised “that the Reading Law programmes places great importance on work experience, aiming to develop the students skills and experience to help them graduate with the best possible prospects”.

The Reading Law School UK also hosts one of the largest pro bono programmes in the UK and the intention is to extend the pro bono programme to Malaysia. This will give students the opportunity to work on a voluntary basis, and give legal advice and support to the local community.

The Reading LLB currently offered in the UK is recognized by the Legal Professional Qualifying Board (LPQB) in Malaysia for the Certificate in Legal Practice Examination (CLPE). The Reading LLB degree to be offered at the Malaysian Campus subject to MQA Full Accreditation will be in line with the MQA programme standards and the requirements of the Legal Profession Qualifying Board.

Professor Wing Lam, Provost of University Reading Malaysia, said “establishing the Reading Law School here in Malaysia also provides excellent opportunities to contribute to continued development of the legal profession through executive education and short courses”.

Law students at the University of Reading Malaysia will benefit from a modern, state-of-the-art campus with a moot court and legal clinic.  The campus is located in Educity, Iskandar Johor, a dedicated education hub that is home not only to the University of Reading Malaysia but also numerous other top-ranked international education institutions.  Students at Educity benefit from world-class sports facilities, Olympic swimming pool, student hub and affordable condo-style accommodation.

Students with STPM, A-level or equivalent qualifications can apply now for the inaugural intake to the LLB Law degree this September.  SPM holders and equivalent can enrol onto the International Foundation Programme (IFP) – Law pathway, to progress onto the LLB Law.
