Developing Intelligent Transport Systems in Iskandar – Future Cities Catapult workshop held at the University of Reading Malaysia

The University of Reading Malaysia is proud to be hosting the first of two workshops aimed at developing an Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) strategy for the Iskandar Regional development Authority (IRDA), Malaysia. The project is led by Future Cities Catapult, a UK company skilled in advancing smart cities.

The Centre for intelligent Places, an inter-disciplinary research centre of Henley Business School at the University of Reading, is working in partnership with Future Cities Catapult to spearhead the 8-month project which focuses on establishing an ITS blueprint for Iskandar Malaysia, and fostering collaboration and partnerships between relevant industry players from Malaysia and the UK. The aim of the project is to lay the groundwork for future international cooperation between Malaysia and the UK in the field of transportation solutions and is created under the Prosperity Fund, a global funding programme created by the UK government to help promote economic and sustainable growth in emerging economies.

The first workshop, titled: ITS for Sustainable Transportation in Iskandar Malaysia, will take place from 11th – 13th of October 2016. The event will draw key transportation policy decision makers from federal, state, and local governments including: the Ministry of Works, Malaysian Highway Authority, Land Public Transport Commission, and Johor Economic Planning Unit. The project will also involve leading UK companies and SMEs with experience in developing and deploying sustainable transportation systems. University of Reading Malaysia academics will also be on hand to add their expert knowledge to the discussions.

The objective of the workshop is to produce a report identifying key transportation challenges in the Iskandar region, list potential ITS solutions, and establish an action plan with a united vision for enhancing the region's transportation system.

A second, follow-up conference will take place in early February 2017 hosted again by the University of Reading Malaysia, led by Future Cities Catapult in partnership with Centre for intelligent Places, Henley Business School. This conference will bring together leading transport related stakeholders in the region including relevant industry players from both Malaysia and the UK to disseminate relevant transport findings, culminating in a final report on future transport recommendations.
