University of Reading Awards Honorary Degree to Chief Executive of Iskandar Regional Development Authority

The University of Reading has today (Saturday 22 July) awarded an honorary degree to the Chief Executive of the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA).

Y.Bhg Datuk Ismail bin Ibrahim received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws during University of Reading Malaysia’s (UoRM) inaugural graduation ceremony, held at its campus at EduCity, Iskandar Puteri, Johor.

Datuk Ismail joins the University's community of more than 275,000 alumni across 150 countries - and a roll of honour of noted honorary graduates, including Her Excellency Vicki Treadell, CMG, MVO, British High Commissioner to Malaysia, who received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws at the formal ceremony of inauguration of the University of Reading Malaysia in February 2016.

Today’s honorary degree was presented by UoRM's Provost, Professor Tony Downes.

Professor Downes said:

“Datuk Ismail has played an instrumental role in the establishment of the University of Reading Malaysia. It has been a pleasure working with him and his team from IRDA, and his continuous support is greatly appreciated.”

“UoRM takes delight in awarding Datuk Ismail an honorary degree in acknowledgement of his notable contribution to the development of the entire Iskandar region.”

Y.Bhg Datuk Ismail bin Ibrahim, Chief Executive of Iskandar Regional Development, said:

Y.Bhg Datuk Ismail bin Ibrahim
Datuk Ismail bin Ibrahim has served as the Chief Executive of Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) since January 2010. He was born in Muar and received his early education at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar, before studying town planning at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Datuk Ismail has had an extensive career in town and country planning. He is registered with the Board of Town Planners Malaysia and began his career in the civil service in 1983 as a town planning officer attached to the Federal Department of Town and Country Planning, Ministry of Housing and Local Government. In 1990 he was awarded the British Council Fellowship to specialise in Planning Law at Newcastle University, England.

Datuk Ismail was previously the Director of the Physical Planning Division, Federal Town and Country Planning Department in Kuala Lumpur, and served as Penang State Town and Country Planning Department Director before being appointed Khazanah Nasional’s Senior Vice President of Special Projects, in 2006, to oversee the planning of Iskandar Malaysia.

Datuk Ismail has previously served as a part-time lecturer at University of Malaya (UM), International Islamic University (UIA), Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
