INTRODUCTION
Malaysia’s national agenda is to transform the construction industry into one which is modern. The Construction Industry Transformation Programme (CITP) was developed with the primary objective of transforming the construction industry towards becoming highly productive, environmentally sustainable, with globally competitive players and to focus on safety and quality standards.
CITP's aim is to become the catalyst to generate positive on other sectors and to help transform Malaysia to be a developed nation with a sustainable high income economy.
The construction industry plays a key role in helping Malaysia move towards realising Vision 2020. However, construction disputes abound. Enhancing the level of knowledge of construction law may help reduce formal disputes. If this is achieved, less time and money would be wasted in resolving disputes and more effort could be put on getting construction projects completed on time, within budget, and to the contracted quality. Among the construction industry’s vision includes enhancing quality in construction, increasing productivity, reducing incidences of non-payment, and help avoid or resolve disputes more efficiently.
This seminar will be used as a platform to demonstrate how this may be achieved from lessons from past experience, reviewing current practices, and innovating for the future. Recent construction court cases are reviewed for lessons to be learnt. And current construction contracts are scrutinised to see how we have progressed and how we may further innovate.
Recommendations include ideas on what more needs to be done as we move towards 2020.
EVENT OBJECTIVES
The event objectives include:
- Fostering collaboration among institutions for the purpose of providing useful and innovative ideas to construction industry;
- Gaining more insights and make better decisions through focus on dispute avoidance rather than just dispute resolution and how the dispute resolution industry can facilitate this;
- Considering how current standard forms of construction contracts are serving the best interest of the construction industry;
- Providing a platform for the industry stakeholders to deliberate on innovative approaches to avoiding and resolving disputes;
- Promoting the use of modern methods of resolving disputes and modern techniques on drafting construction contracts.
