University of Reading Malaysia and British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) Sign Agreement to Establish BMCC Services in Johor

The University of Reading Malaysia (UoRM) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC). The agreement paves the way for the two parties to establish a satellite representation of the BMCC, in the form of a digital incubator, in Johor Bahru.

The digital incubator will officially be known as the BMCC Johor and will be managed by a supervisor from the BMCC Executive Office in Kuala Lumpur and supported by students who are studying the BA Management and Business programme at Henley Business School Malaysia, which is part of UoRM and located in EduCity, in the heart of the fast developing economic region of Iskandar Puteri in Johor.

The initiative will extend BMCC’s presence outside KL and it is hoped the partnership will see an increase in membership numbers and a boost in the proposition and delivery of services such as business and networking events in Johor Bahru.

The objective of the digital incubator is to provide business students with the opportunity to gain technical and practical knowledge, through working in direct collaboration with well-established and recognised British business institutions in Malaysia, including the BMCC.

Professor Tony Downes, Provost of the University of Reading Malaysia said, “This is an excellent opportunity for our business students to gain valuable and relevant work-experience with the aid of some very accomplished professionals and for this we wish to thank the BMCC for partnering with us. I believe the students who participate in this initiative will gain a competitive edge as they will broaden their knowledge and skills through various tasks such as the planning and execution of events, as well as build connections with a wide pool of networks through the BMCC.”

Ms Aurelia Silva, Executive Director of the BMCC said, “We are excited to announce the inauguration of the first satellite chapter of the British Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (BMCC) now opening in Johor. The creation of the BMCC Johor is the result of a close partnership between the BMCC and Henley Business School (HBS) at the University of Reading Malaysia. I believe that with the BMCC Johor, we will better serve our members’ needs and as a result help the business community to continue to grow and prosper.”

The BMCC will select four second year students at HBS to serve as interns in roles including sales/membership executive and marketing/communication executive. Each student will be supported by a first year HBS student, who will also be selected by the BMCC.
