The Challenge of Adapting Evidence-Based Psychological Therapies for Non-Western Cultures

Host:
Dr Carmel Houston-Price (UoRM)

Activity:
Workshop
Date & Time:
Wed, 17 February 2016, 14:30 - 16:30
Venue:
N3.04, University of Reading Malaysia - Educity@Iskandar

Aims of Workshop
Psychological models, such as Beck’s cognitive theory of depression, now underpin many evidence-based psychological treatments for mental health problems. However, these have mainly been developed and tested in the USA, UK or Australia. In addition, definitions of mental health problems (e.g. depression, post-traumatic stress disorder) are based on systems of classification developed in the USA.

In this workshop we will consider how these psychological models apply to people who live in non-Western countries. We will also discuss whether evidence-based psychological treatments (e.g. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) need to be developed or adapted and, if so, how best to make these changes in a systematic way. The workshop will also identify opportunities for collaborative research, training and clinical work in Malaysia and the UK.

We welcome attendance at this workshop by academics, students and those working in clinical practice or related fields. The fee for participation is RM100 (RM65 for students).
